Broken Crown
Chapter One: halcyon days
Yami finishes putting the last touches on the lunches just as Kyo comes stumbling out of her bedroom. Still clad in her bunny pajamas and her snow white hair completely disheveled, she yawns and gives a little wave to her best friend.
“Good morning Yami-chan…” Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, she notices Yami is dressed for school.
“You always wake up so early…” She mumbles.
“Someone has too. Now go get ready, you’re breakfast will get cold.” She replies, her voice slightly muffled by the medical mask she wears. Yawning again, Kyo simply nods and heads to the washroom to get ready for the day.
10 minutes later, Kyo is dressed in her school uniform, a white button down with a tan colored sweater vest on top, black pleated skirt and long white socks, her long hair pulled up into pigtails and her glasses in place. Fully awake and hyperness at maximum levels, she bounces over to Yami who sits reading on their small sofa.
“I’m ready Yami-chan~.” She sings.
“Eat your breakfast.” Yami says, not looking up from her book.
Kyo smiles drops into a pout.
“Yami~ I told you I would handle breakfast. But you do it anyway.”
Yami finally puts her book down.
“One I wake up earlier than you, and two your food is barely edible.”
Kyo gapes offended.
“My cooking is not that bad! All you have to do is scrape off the burnt parts and everything is fine!”
Yami rolls her eyes and puts her book in her bag.
“Tell that to your hospital bill that we still have to pay. Now come on. We’re going to be late for school.” She says while getting up and walking to the door.
Kyo pouts but complies, grabbing her bag she follows behind her.
Outside, the girls meet their neighbor and friend, Naruto Uzumaki. Dressed in his school uniform, white button down, beige sweater vest and black slacks, he yawns and waves.
Much like , Kyo, Naruto isn’t a morning person. But where it takes Kyo a few seconds and a mental pep talk, it takes at least an hour for the hyperactive knucklehead to fully awaken.
Despite knowing this, Kyo still processed to glomp him.
“Good morning Naruto-kun!” She squeals in his ear.
The blond stumbles a bit but quickly regains his balance.
“Morning Kyo-chan, Yami.”
Yami nods at him. “Naruto.”
With the introductions complete, the three friends set off towards school.
Kyo chats happily with Naruto while Yami walks beside them, lost in thought.
“What do you think Yami?....Yami?” Kyo asks turning towards her.
“Hmmm…?” The darkness fades from her eyes as she comes back to reality.
Kyo tilts her head in confusion but decides not to dwell on Yami’s strange behavior. She has been acting weird all week but ...she’s always been a bit weird.
“For my birthday. I want to throw a party. Even though we know the owners, I don’t think we can have it at the bar. I was wondering if we can have it at our place?”
Yami eyes darken again at the mention of Kyo’s upcoming birthday.
“ That sounds fine.” She responds after a moment.
“Awesome!” Naruto exclaims, fully awake surprisingly. Only a few minutes have passed.
“Who else is invited?”
“Anyone Kyo deems fit. Such as you.” She gives Kyo a mischievous look. “ And Gaara I assume.”
Kyo’s eyes widen and red blossoms under her brown cheeks.
“Y-Yami-chan!!!” She cries. Naruto snickers.
Yami looks at her. “What? It couldn’t hurt to invite your potential mate.”
The red dakens to burgundy. Naruto just laughs louder.
“Why do you have to say it like that?”
Yami smirks. “It’s amusing to see you turn so many colors.”
Instead of pouting, Kyo puffs her cheeks out in annoyance.
“You guys are both so mean to me…” She grumbles.
~&~&~&~&~
It’s the middle of the school day at Konoha Senior High School and Kyo sits in World History class, mindlessly doodling. Not paying a lick of attention to Kurenai-sensei.
Normally, Kyo is very studious and takes her classes seriously. And not just because she promised her Baa-chan before she passed away that she would get into a good college, but because she loves learning and likes being on her teacher's good side. But Kyo is barely hanging on in this class. And not because she haveing trouble. Oh no far from it. Kyo loves history.
It’s Sabaku No Gaara. The bane of her academic existence. And the love of her life.
Ever since she first saw him in Junior High School, Kyo has been smitten. Even when he was all angry and scary. Hell, even after he went crazy during the festival and accidently hurt her and Sakura, she was still infatuated.
She never had the nerve to talk to him, however.
When Naruto became his friend after their confrontation, she avoided him. And when Naruto would make plan to hang out that included the stoic redhead, Kyo always declined or made up some excuse to not attend.
On the outside it just looks like she doesn’t like him. but in reality, Kyo fears rejection so much, she does whatever she can to avoid it. Content to just watch from afar. Much like her lavender eyes friend Hinata.
So it makes sense that she would be staring at him while doodling little hearts in her notebook, daydreaming.
Narrowing his eyes, Gaara turns and looks at her. The power of her stare is so intense that he can feel it. Noticing him, noticing her, Kyo panics and does the only thing she can: she slams her face into her desk. This acts earns her several looks from her fellow students.
The regret is instantaneous.
Pain blossoms in her nose and tears run from her tightly closed eyes.
“Pain…”She groans softly. “Pain is all I know…” ‘ok, note to self, don’t try and be an ostrich’
Gaara stared at her a moment longer a confused non-existent eyebrow raised, before shaking his head at focusing back on his own notes.
At lunch, Kyo picks at her food, appetite gone along with her joyful mood.
“What’s up with you...and what happened to your face?” Her green haired friend, Hikaru asks, motioning to the bandage on her nose with her fork.
Sasuke smirks. “She slammed it on her desk.”
“Sasuke~.” Kyo whines.
“From what I understand, Gaara looked at her and she freaked out.”
Hikaru cracks up laughing, along with Kiba and Naruto. Sakura offers a comforting pat on the back while Hinata gives her a small smile of understanding. Kyo’s pout grows.
“Geeze..How are you going to invite him to your party?” Kiba asks once he’s done laughing. Kyo’s eyes widen.
“I-uh….I wasn’t really planning on it…” she whispers.
“What?!” Naruto cries. “ How can you not invite Gaara?! That’s so mean Kyo-Chan!”
“I’ll die. Why do you think I never hang out with you when he’s around. My heart can’t take it.” It was true. One more than one occasion she has fainted from being in close proximity of Gaara. She is no where near as controlled as Hinata. Though in her defence, she hasn’t loved and been around the boy since Pre-K.
“Oops.” Says Yami, though her face is anything but apologetic. Kyo whips her head towards her so fast she nearly breaks her neck.
“Yami…..you...you didn’t…?” Disbelief and betrayal is written all over Kyo’s face. The noirette just shrugs.
“Gaara’s coming this way.” Sakura tells her. Kyo can feel the adrenaline rush through veins. Her hearts pounds and she breaks out into cold sweat.
“Oh man...this never gets old.” Hikaru snickers in Kiba’s ear, watching Kyo.
Kyo turns to see Gaara walking towards them. Or more specifically towards her.
Gaara stops in front of her.
Kyo looks up at him and it takes all her willpower not to faint. They have never been this close. she can...smell him.
Before she can open her mouth and attempt to say something, he thrusts a piece of paper into her face. Blinking, confused, it takes a couple of seconds for the words to register into brain.
Would you like to attend Kyo’s 17th Birthday Party this Saturday?
Yes or No
The “Yes” is circled.
With a shaky hand she takes the paper from him.
“S-see you Saturday…” Kyo whispers. Gaara just grunts. With a little nod, he turns and walks away.
Kyo is frozen. The paper still clutched in her hand.
“He’s….Gaara’s….Coming to my ...Birthday..party….” Those are the last words she says before fainting.
“Man she has it bad.” Kiba shakes his head.
“Almost as bad as Hinata was.” Ino adds.
“I would have to say worse.” Responds Sasuke.
After a second of thought everyone but Hinata and Naruto nods in agreement. Hinata because she is embarrassed and Naruto because he is confused.
After that, school flies by, with only a few other incidents of pain caused by a certain red head.
At home, Kyo is stressed out. Papers are all over the living room, her hair is a mess and she has a look in her eyes that’s borderline murderous.
Kyo likes to plan. She likes making lists and charts and likes to have everything organized. Likes it to the point of insanity. If things don’t go the way she thinks they should, she gets a little...crazy.
Kinda like that episode of SpongeBob when he was throwing that house party.
And the fact that her crush is attending only makes things worse.
Yami sits reading at the kitchen counter, paying her no attention.
After a moment of talking to herself, Kyo looks to her friend for help.
“Yami-chan!” she whines “What should I do?! What colors should I use?? Yami? Yami!!!”
The black haired teen sighs and puts her books down.
“Your birthday isn’t for three more days. Calm down before you give yourself and aneurysm.
“But Yami-chan!!! Gaara will be here!! Everything needs to be perfect!” Kyo wails flopping onto her back, causing papers to fly up around her. Yami sighs again.
“Hmmm...fine then….I have a suggestion. Why don’t we have a costume party?”
“A costume party? In April?” Kyo questions.
“Yeah. It will be...fun…” Yami’s voice trails off at the end and the darkness returns to her eyes for a second. Kyo doesn’t notice, she too busy rolling the idea around in her head.
“That’s a great Idea Yami-chan! I’ll go tell everybody. Thank you!!” The bubbly girl hops up and bounces over to Yami and gives her a big hug. After releasing her, Kyo prances to her room, ready to send out the new information to her potential party guests. Just as she prances past Yami’s room she hears her phone ring. Being the good friend she is, she goes in and grabs it, intent on bringing it to her.
“Yami-chan! she calls, cell phone in hand. “ Your phone is ringing!” Kyo looks at irt. “OH! It’s Deidara. Do you want me to answer it? You have some text messages too. I get the feeling that it’s important”
In the living room, Yami’s eyes widen and she tenses.
“J-just leave it be. I’ll get back to him.” She calls back while getting on the stool and walking towards her. The phone stops buzzing in Kyo’s hand. Shrugging, she hands the phone over when Yami meets her in the hallway. Tilting her head to the side, she comments on Yami’s expression. She looks….scared.
“Yami-chan?” Kyo asks peering at her. “ Are you okay?”
“Yeah. Fine.” She says, brushing past her and going to her room. Kyo frowns.
After school the next day, as Kyo and Yami are walking home, a thought suddenly occures to her.
“Hey Yami-chan. Do you want me to invite Itachi-san?”
Yami is quiet for a long moment.
“Yami-chan?”
“....It would be best if you didn’t invite him….” She finally answers. Kyo finds that weird. She knew Yami liked Itachi and that he liked her. And even though they never really made it official they were kinda dating.
“Are you sure? Did something happen?”
Yami gives a serious look.
“Please Kyo. I do not wish to see him there.” There is no room for negotiation in her voice. Kyo frowns, even more confused, but in the end complies with her friends wishes.
“Alright. Whatever you say …” I wonder what happened. She thinks.
The rest of the walk is in silence.
